“Water and Bloom” is an original drawing by Katy Hayward, featuring the kapokapowai / Uropetala carovei — Aotearoa’s incredible native giant dragonfly — resting amongst climbing native rātā vine.

$5 from every print sold will be donated to Whangarei Native Bird Recovery to help support native wildlife conservation here in Aotearoa. 💚

The New Zealand giant dragonfly, or kapokapowai, is one of Aotearoa’s most ancient and remarkable native insects. With its striking yellow and black markings and powerful wingspan, it moves through the bush with both strength and grace — a quiet predator woven into the rhythms of our wetlands and forests.

In this piece, the giant dragonfly is paired with climbing native rātā vine, a plant known for slowly reaching upward through the canopy before bursting into vivid red bloom. Together, they represent resilience, transformation, and the wild beauty of Aotearoa’s native world — delicate yet enduring, powerful yet deeply connected to the land they call home.

This drawing was inspired by a special moment earlier this year, when one of these beautiful dragonflies landed gently on Katy’s arm while her family were checking traps in their bush.

Created with patience and a lot of quiet focus, this artwork is available as a limited edition fine art print in A4 and A3 sizes.
